At 64, Maha, retired and alone in Tripoli, reconnects with her childhood dream of becoming an astronaut. Film was streaming on Canal+.
Synopsis (EN) :
Tripoli, North Lebanon.
At 64, Maha has just taken her retirement from teaching.
This new life puts her in the face of her loneliness as a divorced woman, whose children have left their home to live abroad for years now.
The sole company of her faithful neighbors is no longer enough for Maha to fight the terrible feeling of emptiness and boredom in which she now finds herself.
But had not she always dreamed of being an astronaut? And what if she lets herself drift to this promise of escape?

A 64 ans, Maha vient tout juste de prendre sa retraite d’enseignante.
Cette nouvelle vie la met face à sa solitude et son ennui de femme divorcée, notamment que ses enfants sont partis vivre à l’étranger depuis des années.
Mais n’avait-elle pas toujours rêvé d’être astronaute ? Et si elle se laissait aller à cette promesse d’évasion ?

Cinema has always been a privileged way for me to express myself, especially to deal with issues and themes that awaken in me a feeling of injustice; more generally the norms and constraints imposed by society on our individual freedom.
The film treats elderly women in the Arab world by showing Maha, the newly retired and single woman, trying to handle and deal with her new life. This film also treats immigration and distance by bringing forward the video-relationship she has with her children.
The film mostly talks about the status of women in the Arab communities, where Maha was always thought to be a perfect housewife and great mother, but the society did not tell or make it easy for her to follow her dream.
When my mother told me for the first time that she wanted to be a space MAN (رجل فضاء), I found it funny for a woman to use such a term describing herself. I always wondered why the word astronaut is always translated into Arabic as (رجل فضاء): which means Space Man/Rider. What about female astronauts? So, I slowly started to realize the big gap that still exists between both genders, surely more present in the Arab world. Throughout the years, women have been able to obtain more rights and independency, however, it is still a long process. Especially with my mother, a 64 years old woman, raised in a society that recognizes her as a decent woman only when she is a mother and a good wife. Women of her age today, , weren’t taken seriously and were not allowed to have big dreams during their younger years Her dream of becoming an astronaut is an example.
With time, I am more and more drawn to making films that combine different genres, including documentaries to capture reality and fiction with staging. Which I would like to call: Hybrid.

Le cinéma a toujours été pour moi un moyen privilégié de m’exprimer, notamment pour aborder des questions et des thèmes qui éveillent en moi un sentiment d’injustice, et plus largement les normes et contraintes que la société impose à notre liberté individuelle.
Le film traite de la condition des femmes âgées dans le monde arabe en montrant Maha, une femme nouvellement retraitée et célibataire, qui tente de gérer et d’apprivoiser sa nouvelle vie. Il aborde également l’immigration et la distance en mettant en avant la relation vidéo qu’elle entretient avec ses enfants.
Le film parle principalement du statut des femmes dans les communautés arabes, où Maha a toujours été perçue comme une parfaite femme au foyer et une excellente mère, mais où la société ne lui a ni dit ni facilité la possibilité de suivre son rêve.
Lorsque ma mère m’a dit pour la première fois qu’elle voulait devenir un homme de l’espace (رجل فضاء), j’ai trouvé amusant qu’une femme utilise un tel terme pour se décrire. Je me suis toujours demandé pourquoi le mot « astronaute » est presque toujours traduit en arabe par (رجل فضاء), qui signifie littéralement homme ou cavalier de l’espace. Qu’en est-il des femmes astronautes ? J’ai alors commencé à prendre conscience du grand écart qui existe encore entre les deux genres, sans doute encore plus présent dans le monde arabe. Au fil des années, les femmes ont pu obtenir davantage de droits et d’indépendance, mais le chemin reste long. Surtout pour ma mère, une femme de 64 ans, élevée dans une société qui ne reconnaît sa respectabilité que lorsqu’elle est mère et bonne épouse. Les femmes de sa génération n’étaient pas prises au sérieux et n’étaient pas autorisées à avoir de grands rêves dans leur jeunesse. Son rêve de devenir astronaute en est un exemple.
Avec le temps, je suis de plus en plus attiré par la réalisation de films qui mêlent différents genres, notamment le documentaire pour capter le réel et la fiction par la mise en scène. C’est ce que j’aimerais appeler : l’hybride.
